Pupils pick their GCSE option subjects in February of Year 9. The process begins with an assembly and a parents evening in Feburary.  Currently there are 5 core subjects English, Maths, Science, Religious Education and Physical Education that all pupils take. Pupils then have 5 options to choose for their other GCSE subjects. See the options form below.

Pupils will have a parents evening before making their final choices at the end of February. This is an exciting opportunity to choose subjects that they will enjoy and there is an option to start new subjects such as Business Studies or Philosophy and Ethics. We advise pupils to try and gather as much information as possible before making their decision and to try and maintain a balance of subjects. If pupils are considering the sixth form at Balcarras they currently need two 6s and three 5s at GCSE including Maths and English. Some A level subjects have a minimum grade requirement from GCSE while some subjects  do not have to have been studied at GCSE (such as Psychology). See our sixth form pages for more information on this, or talk to subject teachers.

The other thing to consider is the EBACC award, which is an extra qualification, which you get automatically if you gain a grade 5 or above in the following subjects: English, Maths, two Sciences, a Language and either History or Geography.
