On Thursday the Department for Education published the final validated GCSE results for 2024. Balcarras achieved a Progress 8 Score of +0.83. This was the highest in the school’s history and places us in the top 5% of all schools nationally for progress.

Progress 8 is a way of measuring the progress that pupils make from the end of primary school to the end of Year 11 across 8 subjects—maths, English, English literature, 3 EBACC subjects (science, history, geography, computer science) and 3 other subjects.

It’s a complicated measure. Basically the higher the number the better and Balcarras’ number is pretty high.

In terms of raw results the school also did superbly well. Over 80% of our pupils achieved a Grade 5+ in both English and maths. This places us inside the top 30 comprehensive schools nationally…i.e. in the top 1%.
