Silverware for Balcarras in West of England Championships

The Balcarras golf team headed to Burnham & Berrow GC to be the first ever state school to take part in the prestigious South West boys golf tournament. Each year 8 teams qualify to play in the tournament.

Day one was a gross competition to rank the teams into a cup and plate competition. The conditions were very tricky with strong winds and rain. Our lowest score was from Yr13 student Alex  who shot a gross 77 and came 5th out of the 40 competitors involved.

Balcarras were then seeded in the plate competition which was now a matchplay format. Balcarras played local rival’s Cheltenham college in the semi final. After a tough start the boys were down on the front nine but showed unbelievable spirit to turn it round and win 4-1. A notable win for both Artie 5&4 and Teddy 2&1. The other semi final saw Marlborough college narrowly beat Radley on the last hole.

The Balcarras players started the final with momentum in their favour. Up in all matches and the boys playing some superb golf. Lovely wins for Alex 5&4, Artie  6&5 and Teddy 5&3. Stan then won 4&3 against a strong player. Stan hitting every fairway and playing well in the wind. Finally, the closet match saw Noah go 4up early but a strong comeback from the Marlborough player saw the match all square after 14 holes. Noah then went one down before some incredible shots to win the match 2up on the last. A 5-0 win for Balcarras to win the plate trophy and also qualify for next years competition.

I would like to pay huge thanks to the school and in particular Mr Burke for all the support golf has had at the school over the years. Thanks to Mr Niblett who gave us the chance to enter this tournament. I would also like to thank Joe Lane from Marlborough College  who organised the tournament and finally the parents of the players for their unbelievable support.
