Celebrating the Women Who Changed the World
Who would you nominate for influential women who have shaped the course of history?
The Balcarras History Department has launched a new initiative to celebrate influential women who have shaped the course of history.
Building on the department’s popular “Historical Legends” graffiti wall, students are now being invited to nominate women who deserve recognition in a new section of the display on the theme of “Queens, Rebels & Revolutionaries.”
The project aims to highlight individuals from medieval times to the modern day who demonstrated leadership, courage, innovation and determination in fields such as politics, science, exploration, activism and the arts.
The display complements the department’s balanced curriculum, which ensures students explore the experiences and contributions of groups who have often been under-represented in traditional historical narratives.
In Year 7, students are currently studying — or are about to begin studying — the lives of influential women in history.
In Year 10, GCSE historians will soon begin a depth study on one of Britain’s earliest feminist icons, examining the development of the campaign for women’s rights.
Meanwhile, A Level students have explored the feminist revolution and the counter-revolution, analysing both the advances made and the resistance faced by women’s movements in modern history and politics.
Students are encouraged to submit nominations suggesting figures they believe changed the world or challenged the expectations of their time.

The chosen figures will then be added to the department’s graffiti-style wall display, alongside other historical icons. These will be added by our local team of graffiti artists.
