Thick Jumper Day

Balcarras held its annual Thick Jumper Day
Each year we have a Thick Jumper Day where we turn the heating down in the school. We took this idea from a school exchange with a school in Belgium some years ago. The idea behind it is to encourage people to have positive behaviour when it comes to heating the school. Closing doors and windows rather than wasting heat is a way to save money for the school and to reduce our Carbon Footprint. As a school we have signed up to be a Zero Carbon school. This is one of the ways we can all have a positive impact to reduce our impact.
All pupils took part and wore thick jumpers, there was a competition for the best thick jumper, this was judged by some sixth formers and the schools Eco club. The winners all recieved some fairtrade Tomys chocolate. The winners were; Ben Pearce (Yr 8), Ben Skeet (Yr 9), Archie Hillam (Yr 9), Archie Bareham (Yr 7), Emily McGee (Yr 7) and Kaylin Mupunga (Yr 8).
We also had a staff 'Empty car park day' where staff were challenged to find an alternative way of coming to school rather than driving in on there own. Over a dozen staff changed their commute, with staff car sharing, cycling, walking and even running to school. The aim of this was to try to reduce the impact that our travel can have on the environment.
Thanks to everyone that took part
