Pupils talk Climate change with council

Pupils take part in local democracy and discuss their views on Climate change

Last year Balcarras had over 500 pupils took part in a Youth Climate Survey.  This was a county wide survey and was looking at young peoples views on climate change. Balcarras pupils were invited to give their opinions on the survey and climate change to the borough council, at the Cheltenham council chambers.

The survey was conducted by InterClimate Network, in collaboration with Gloucestershire Youth Climate Group, Creative Sustainability, Planet Cheltenham, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, and supported by Gloucestershire County Council.  These groups were present along with local councillors from the borough council.

"This was an opportunity for us to share our views on climate change with local politicians and to see the process of how these issues are discussed within our community" said Melissa Williams in Year 13.  There were wide ranging discussions about actions that groups are taking to reduce Carbon emissions, as well as the importance of schools and charities to allow young people to take action on environmental issues.

The survey was completed by nearly 3,000 young people from across Gloucestershire who sent a clear message that they want more joined-up action on climate change. 8 out of 10 young people said they are concerned about climate change. The good news is that 3 in 4 are already choosing to act on climate change.  The other key findings of the survey were the importance of families in taking positive actions, and how young people want opportunities to take positive actions.
