International artist works with 6th form

International artist Ian Murphy visited Balcarras

Ian Murphy Drawing Workshop.

On the 27th September, we were lucky enough to welcome international artist Ian Murphy into the art department for the day to work with our sixth formers.  This was an exciting opportunity for our students to enrich their skills as young developing artists and creative people.  Ian Murphy works worldwide as a practicing artist and he runs talks and workshops with students and adults across the globe.  His work is inspired by what he sees as he travels; often looking at architecture, focusing on the details of buildings and cityscapes.

Students were  taught about a range of his techniques on the day. He certainly packed their time with high energy and exciting tasks!  They learnt about creating surfaces to draw onto, how to select the right composition and how to consider their use of tone when making purposeful decisions about their work. For some the fast pace of the day was challenging, however, by the end of the day all found it hugely rewarding and were thrilled with the outcome of their work.  This was certainly a memorable day for students and teachers alike.
