Our House System

Each youngster coming to Balcarras is placed in a House tutor group, which is also his/her Year 7 teaching group for most subjects, and is gradually introduced to the ways of the school. Each pupil has a specialist tutor to whom s/he may turn for help at any time.

The four Houses are:

• Foley: Head of House - Miss L McCarthy
• Graveney: Head of House - Mr P A Greenway
  
• Ottewell: Head of House - Mrs J E McClelland
• Selvey: Head of House - Mr D Leatherbarrow

The Houses are named after:

• Mrs Winifred Foley, the celebrated writer of Forest of Dean life.
• Mr Tom Graveney, OBE, one of England's greatest cricketers, who lives in Cheltenham
• Mr Gordon Ottewell, writer of children's and nature books and one time Head of Glenfall Primary School which send children each year to Balcarras
• Mr Peter Selvey, who taught for nearly three decades at Charlton Kings Secondary School and was Head of Mathematics there from 1963 until he retired.

All houses:

• Go on regular trips
• Are involved in sporting matches
• Take part in competitive events
• Want you to earn merits
• Have their own assemblies
• Support charities
