Attendance & Punctuality

February 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am the recently appointed Education Welfare Officer working between Balcarras School and The High school Leckhampton. I will be working with pupils struggling to attend school and their families to help improve attendance.

You may be aware from recent headlines that non-attendance has become more of a problem in schools nationally since the pandemic, however face-to-face education remains critically important in helping pupils to fulfil their potential. Across our schools we believe that during school time pupils should be in class with their teachers and peers enjoying all the benefits this brings – including attainment, wellbeing and wider life opportunities.

As parents or carers of a child you have a legal responsibility to ensure your child receives a suitable education. Being in school every day is important to your child’s achievement, wellbeing, and their wider development. School attendance is important for equipping your child with skills for life.

The below poster is a helpful way of seeing the wider impact of absence and poor punctuality. It is not therefore surprising that evidence shows pupils who achieve higher grades have lower levels of absence compared to those with those who do not. Aside from academic achievement, school is an enriching environment that can help your child with their social and mental wellbeing.

At this time of year particularly illnesses are more widespread, and it can be difficult to know whether your child is too ill to attend school. NHS guidance is clear that it is fine to send them in with a minor cough or common cold, provided they don’t have a temperature. Click here to access helpful advice in relation to other illnesses too.

If your child is struggling to attend school, you can expect me to make contact and arrange to meet with you and your child.  This is to help understand the reasons for your child's absence and identify what support you or they may need to overcome the barriers to attendance.

Please don't hesitate to contact me via rcw@balcarras.gloucs.sch.uk if you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance or wish to meet with me in person.

Yours sincerely,

Rosalind Waters
