Examination Information 2010

Volcanic Ash, Industrial Action & Examinations

Airports across much of Europe have faced major disruption because of an ash cloud caused by an erupting volcano in Iceland. Experts say it is unclear how long the problems to aviation will continue (extract: bbc.co.uk/weather).

The strikes - which may lead to up to 20 days of walkouts - raise the spectre of a summer of travel chaos for millions of travelling customers (extract: Dailymail/travel).

The majority of Year 11 and sixth form students will be sitting vital public examinations immediately after the May half-term break.

It is very unlikely that the exam boards will be able to give any leniency to any student who cannot take an examination because of delayed flights due to the volcanic ash or due to industrial action by the flight companies. This means that students needing to achieve particular grades for entry to university or entry to the sixth form, might run the risk of finding themselves without a place come September.

Balcarras School strongly recommends that students – particularly those in Years 11,12 & 13 - do not take flights over this May half-term holiday.
