401 marathons

Pupils were treated to a motivational talk by Ben Smith, who ran 401 marathons in 401 days

This was a thought provoking talk given to sixth formers.  Ben discussed what makes someone successful and gave an honest account of his journey.  He talked about overcoming bullying at school, and then had a stroke while he was still in his twenties.  He decided he wanted to take on a new challenge and set about raising £300,000 for two anti bullying charities; Stonewall and Kidscape.

He new he needed a unique challenge, and so he came up with the idea of running 401 consecutive marathons in 401 days.  It is hard enough to run one marathon, let alone to do this day in day out for over a year.  Ben completed his challenge and has now set up his own foundation to support  mental health charities and bullying charities.

He was dubbed the fundraiser of the year in the 'ITV Pride of Britain' awards in 2017

His message was to find something you enjoy doing and then have the determination to overcome the challenge.  He managed to complete his challenge after only running for 6 years.  He said that he was 'just an ordinary bloke who was not particuarly atheletic'.  Many thanks to Ben for coming in and talking to the pupils.
